At last Rob got his wish: a meet in Cornwall! Since it's inception SWTOC had always travelled north of Exeter for its meets, but this time we decided to head west for an epic weekend near Falmouth. First Dave met up with Matt and Paul at Bristol, then Matt at Cheddar, Antony at Exeter and finally Andy at Launceston before heading into deepest darkest Cornwall to meet up with Rob just outside Truro who would lead the way to the camp site.
We arrived mid evening and had just about enough time to get the tents and gazebo up before it got dark. Rob cooked a mean BBQ, and much alcohol was drunk as stories were swapped a good way into the night. The next morning we awoke bleary eyed to the sound of rain hammering down on the tent roofs, but no matter, it was due to be gone soon so we headed off to the nearest greasy spoon for a fry up before the day began in earnest.
And what a day it turned out to be. From our base outside of Falmouth we embarked on a 60-odd mile tour around the bottom of Cornwall taking in the delights of Marazion, Penzance, St Just, St Ives, Hayle, Portreath, Redruth and Falmouth before stopping off at the local supermarket for the night's provisions. As ever, it wouldn't be a SWTOC meet without mechanical problems - Matt's car was losing electricity faster than it could be put in, and Antony's car wasn't going anywhere without a bump start. Fortunately for Ant it was eventually discovered to be a disconnected alternator lead, so a few extra miles hoonage - purely for battery charging you understand - soon got the car back up and running properly again.
That night again the weather threatened - we even saw a tornado way out to the west (no, seriously, we did!) - but it was no more than drizzle, and eventually we settled down for a second night under canvas. Awaking on the Sunday morning we were packed up sharpish and with the threat of bad weather soon on our way. However, the morning brightened so after stopping off at Rob's for a coffee we were off to the pub for lunch before heading home.
Alas the weather eventually did play one last hand, and as the group broke up on the way back, so we all got a proper drenching at some point or other before eventually getting home. Still, no matter, it's all part of the fun(!). Plus a drenching or two isn't enough to put hardy SWTOCers from vowing to make a return trip next year too - it was a fantastic couple of days with great company, great scenery, great drives and a great deal of alcohol - what else do you need for the perfect weekend (well, apart from the obvious but this is a family site!).
So cheers for the organising Rob, and see you all again soon.
